Sirius

About Us

Kelli and Jason Cyr are the breeders behind Sirius Retrievers and are located in Bolton, CT. We are a small preservation breeder and have litters only very occasionally (once every 1-3 years).

Our dogs live in our home and are part of our family. We believe that tollers are first and foremost a hunting companion, so all of our dogs are actively hunted whenever possible.

We strive to maintain the exceptional versatility of the toller and regularly participate in AKC all-breed and specialty shows, hunt tests, agility, and obedience trials.

We require breed-appropriate health and genetic testing for all dogs used in our breeding program.

Our Mission

  • To breed to the Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever standard
  • To breed dogs of quality, type, and form
  • To breed with the foremost attention to health and temperament
  • To breed the versatile and intelligent dog who will excel in any performance venue
  • To breed the great family dog who loves and is loved

Our Beginning

In 2009, we decided that we were ready to get our first dog as a couple. Jason was interested in an occasional hunting partner, and Kelli wanted a super-smart dog that would make an awesome and active family pet. We wanted a medium-sized dog, one that we could pick up and carry in a pinch if needed. We did a ton of online research, but nothing seemed to fit what we were looking for. Then we came across the Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever. It was perfect! But… we had never heard of or seen this breed in person… and it had a weird name… we thought, they can’t be that great if they aren’t popular, right? We kept looking around and considering other breeds (online quizzes kept matching us with the Poodle), but kept coming back to the toller. It was also a Canadian breed, and Jason was born and raised in New Brunswick, so that was pretty cool to have the connection back to his Acadian heritage. We decided to take the plunge. We researched reputable breeders in our area and in July 2009 we brought home our first toller puppy, London, from Shamrock Kennels in Seneca Falls, NY.

To say that Tollers have changed our life would be an understatement. We have since become involved in multiple dog performance venues, which we didn’t even know existed when we picked up our pet. Jean Gilroy (Shamrock Kennels) has been an amazing breed mentor, and we are proud to be a part of a wonderful community of toller enthusiasts.
